To create a new project in Revit you always start from a template. A project template in Revit is basically just a project with predefined datum/building/settings/views but it has a different extension, .rvt. So, when you start a new project, you never start from zero in terms of populating the project with basic elements. But most importantly, you have consistent settings set up already and between old and new projects.
